There is a shortage of geriatricians in Canada and as such it is not feasible for every older patient with cancer to be seen by a geriatrician. The G8 is an evidence-based triage tool that can more accurately identify patients most likely to benefit from comprehensive geriatric assessment. The G8 screening tool is a suggested clinical practice as many guidelines recommend the routine use of a geriatric assessment for older patients with cancer. This process optimizes geriatric-related health deficits, informs chemotherapy decision-making, and improves chemotherapy tolerance.

The purpose of this project is to use implementation science to promote the uptake and sustainability of the G8 screening tool in older oncology outpatients at St. Michael’s Hospital. A formative evaluation will be conducted and the results will be used to select implementation strategies and develop a plan for the implementation and sustainability of the G8 screening tool.
